The Sacramento NWPC meeting on Monday, September 13 was very informative with the presentation that Rachel Michelin of CA Women Lead gave us over dinner. Rachel encourages women to get involved at any and all levels of governance. Her goal for growing the numbers of women involved in decision making positions was evident in the enthusiasm and energy she had in telling us about this work.

Our August celebration of the 90th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment was held at Time Test Books on Thursday, August 26, 2010 with a showing of Iron Jawed Angels. There was ice cream donated in part by Gunther’s, toppings, popcorn, drinks and cookies (baked by Kari Bryski) for the audience to snack on while watching the film. The movie was an eye opener for many attendees who had no idea what many of the suffragists went through in trying to achieve this basic right of citizenship, the right to vote. They were treated as political prisoners with a loss of their human rights that were later deemed unconstitutional. The dedication, sacrifice, and hard work that these pioneers labored through was tremendous, but the work is not yet finished. There was also a raffle for prizes generously donated by our local caucus president, Heather Fargo, as well as a large designer Nick and Nora cookie jar donated by Kimberly Smith filled with gourmet cookies baked by John Kalfakis. Copies of the movie were sold out ($10 donation) after the viewing. There is a story by the Sacramento Press reporter who came to the event. You can view it here.
Teray Stephens, President of the State NWPC, was in attendance and spoke to us about the Women’s Appointment Project that was kicked off that morning on the steps of the capitol. There were a lot of other activities by women’s groups near the capitol that day commemorating this great move forward for women in the United States. More still needs to be done getting women heard and properly represented in our government. That is the mission of the NWPC.

The Sacramento National Political Women’s Caucus (NWPC) had a wonderful evening of great food, fabulous art and intriguing conversation. Attendees savored light appetizers and an open bar at the Fox and Goose while mingling with elected women representatives, women running for office and other like-minded individuals. Our special guest, the dynamic and inspiring NWPC member Delaine Eastin was very informative.
